Wittgenstein

"The aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because of their simplicity and familiarity. (One is unable to notice something -because it is always before one's eyes.) The real foundations of his enquiry do not strike a man at all. Unless that fact has at some time struck him. - And this means: we fail to be struck by what, once seen, is most striking and most powerful."

Ludwig Wittgenstein in "Philosophical Investigations" (129)

Animals

Animals are . . . the visible phantoms of our souls. --Victor Hugo
Cats and monkeys, monkeys and cats--all human life is there. --Henry James (The Madonna of the Future)
Many primatologists have experienced a profound change in their attitude towards anthropoid apes after making eye contact with one for the first time. The spark across the species barrier is never forgotten. --Frans De Waal (Waal and Lanting 1997:1)

Feynman

- Look, Prof. Feynman. We have spent millions to prove your theory.

- What a waste! Why don't you just believe me?

Night in Roma

Lights, ruins.
Shades, silence.
Couples minged in cars.
Kids climbed the gates.
Endless walk,

Around Coloseum.
A solid void
Filled in thousand years.
In the darkness.
I woke up
From the coldest stone.
Drank spring from neverwhere.
Endless walk,
Around Coloseum,
In the morning fog.

Will get you there!

Meeting a great mentor is not very frequent experience. Bob Bingham introduced me to Ron Bennet, a sculpture professor in art department last year. Yesterday, I finally met him in his studio at the sub-sub-basement of DH. "I am a computer scientist and I want to do something that is hard for computers - sculpting," I said. "Well, I am glad to hear that," Ron replied. I could hardly hear his voice because of the noises of the wood sawing machine operated by a student...

I told Ron that I made some clay sculptures and wanted to learn metal casting from him. Ron suggested me to attend his sculpture class but his class has been very full. "You can come anytime if you have time," he said. "Let's trade: I teach you casting and you teach me how to design a web site." "Great!" "I can show you how to build a furnace in two thousand dollars, but you have to check your zoning code," Ron said. "I see, so we won't burn down the house." "Don't worry, we would get you there!" Ron said.

Back to Clay

Clay is fun to work with. However, it is hard to carry the wet sculptures from the studio to home.

United Nude

United Nude shoes and sandals are inspired by the Barcelona chair design of famous architect Mies van der Rohe and based on the infinity loop of the Mobius strip. Founded by Dutch architect Rem D Koolhaas and seventh generation English shoemaker Galahad Clark, United Nude operates as a design company, in partnership with manufacturers in Shanghai and Taiwan. Rem D Koolhaas thought traditional architecture is too cold, too big and too old. He wanted to design something very intimate to women - contemporary shoes. As for the name – United Nude represents the philosophy of the brand. “The products evolve in projects from international teams (=United) in an open way with direct recognition (=Nude)”. In particular, 'nude' also means 'invisible heel shoes'. Many of their products are not cheap though, ranging from $330 to $350 each. Source: http://www.thread.co.nz/article/1028

Dream 100806

I walked in a farm of cubics
In three dimensions
Across the walls
Hundreds people there
I saw heads
But no faces.
I saw desks
But no windows...

Come here
We have new furniture.
One bed after another
Oak panel for readings

On artist

This gentelman in the gellary who helped to setup the exhibition gave me a recipe of an artist:
"Get drunk.
Get distracted.
Feel a lot of pain.
Do art like crazy.
Then you become an artist,"

he said frankly.

Jill Lion - Sculptor

It was a very pleasant trip to University of Maryland, College Park, for the NASA AISR PI Workshop, from Oct. 2 to 5. The University Conference Center and Inn houses a great collection of artwork. Yesterday, the 5th was the Baltimore based sculptor Jill Lion's opening exhibit at the gallary in the conference center. Luckily, I met the artist in person after the Workshop was concluded. Lion is a very nice lady and she gave me helpful suggestions to do sculptures. "Sculpture is to relieve the objects inside the stone," she said. "You need a ventilation system in your studio." We then talked details about materials and processes. Her husband, a very nice gentleman joined the conversation and gave insightful comments.

Along the hallway, there were four pieces of sculptures that features female breasts. "Why did you create three breasts in each piece?" I asked Lion. She replied, "I have three sisters who had lumps in their breasts. These sculptures represent the deformation as the cancer progress...such as bioposy" I was shocked and speechless for a while. "Do you feel a bit of relief while you doing the sculptures?" I asked. "Yes!" she replied.

"Carving stone has given me the chance to express strong emotions without words. I work alone; getting dirty and making messes confirm my energy," Lion said.

Sipper's Law of Academic Research

The academic activity is predominantly one of cerebral stimulation intended for one's own intellectual satisfaction -- mental masturbation, as it were. Surprisingly, unlike that other kind, beautiful offspring are often born. - Moshe Sipper
